Mathematics

Grade 1 Mathematics centers on developing strategies for addition and subtraction within 20 and understanding whole number relationships and place value up to 120. Students also begin measuring lengths, telling time, and reasoning about attributes of shapes to build a strong foundation in number and geometry.

Grade 2 Mathematics focuses on building fluency with addition and subtraction within 100, understanding place value up to 1,000, and working with equal groups of objects as a foundation for multiplication. Students also measure and estimate lengths, represent and interpret data, and explore shapes and their attributes.

Grade 3 Mathematics focuses on developing multiplication and division fluency, understanding fractions as numbers, and solving problems involving the four operations. Students also begin to explore concepts of area, measurement, and data, laying the groundwork for more complex geometric and numerical reasoning.

Grade 7 Mathematics deepens students’ understanding of proportional relationships, operations with rational numbers, and linear equations. Students also engage in solving real-world and mathematical problems involving scale drawings, geometric constructions, and statistics, including probability and data distributions.

Grade 8 Mathematics prepares students for high school algebra by focusing on linear equations, functions, and the connections between proportional and non-proportional relationships. Students also explore transformations, the Pythagorean Theorem, and volume, while beginning to analyze patterns in bivariate data.

Grade 9 Mathematics, typically Algebra I, emphasizes understanding linear, quadratic, and exponential relationships through expressions, equations, and functions. Students develop skills in modeling real-world situations, solving equations, and analyzing data to build a strong foundation for higher-level mathematics.

Grade 10 Mathematics, often focused on Geometry, emphasizes reasoning with shapes and their properties, proving geometric theorems, and applying the Pythagorean Theorem and trigonometry. Students also analyze two- and three-dimensional figures, use coordinates to solve problems, and deepen their understanding of congruence and similarity through transformations.

Grade 12 Mathematics focuses on preparing students for college and career readiness through advanced topics such as precalculus, statistics, or quantitative reasoning. Students deepen their understanding of functions, modeling, and data analysis, applying mathematical concepts to solve complex, real-world problems across disciplines.
