Week 04 – Day 1: Introduction to Main Idea & Supporting Details
In this lesson, students will explore how to determine the main idea of a nonfiction text and identify the key supporting details that explain or develop that idea. Using the passage “Why Bees Matter” as a reference, students will engage in structured activities that build reading comprehension skills aligned to Standard RI.5.2.
Through teacher modeling, interactive discussion, guided reading, and two comprehension quizzes, students will learn how to summarize a paragraph or passage by focusing on what it is mostly about and which details support that point. The lesson concludes with a take-home assignment and a self-assessment to reinforce independent understanding.
This one-hour session is designed to strengthen students’ ability to extract important information from informational texts—a vital skill in both academic and real-world reading.
