Week 01 – Day 3: Introduction to Summarization

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the concept and purpose of summarization as a foundational skill in reading and communication. Through guided instruction, modeling, and hands-on practice, students will learn how to identify main ideas and supporting details and write concise summaries of short texts. Emphasis will be placed on distinguishing summarization from paraphrasing or retelling, and using strategies such as the “5Ws and H” and “Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then.” This lesson supports SL.7.2 standards and helps learners improve comprehension, organization, and expression of ideas in their own words.
